How to Choose the Right Cable

Start with the connection standard your devices require. For ethernet networking, Cat5e handles gigabit speeds at up to 100 meters and is the most cost-effective choice for basic runs. Cat6 provides better crosstalk protection and supports 10 Gbps at shorter distances, while Cat6a maintains 10 Gbps over the full 100-meter run and is the best choice for new installations and PoE deployments. Shielded (STP) variants are worth the premium in environments with heavy electromagnetic interference from motors, fluorescent lighting, or dense cable bundles.

For video connections, HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 1.4 both support 4K at high refresh rates. DisplayPort is the preferred standard for PC monitors and multi-display daisy-chaining, while HDMI is universal for TVs, projectors, and consumer displays.
