Ubiquiti UniFi Pro 48 PoE - Managed 48-Port Layer 3 Switch with 600W PoE Budget
The Ubiquiti UniFi Pro 48 PoE (USW-PRO-48-POE) is a 1U rack-mount Layer 3 managed switch with 48 Gigabit Ethernet ports, 40 delivering PoE+ (802.3af/at) and 8 delivering PoE++ (802.3bt) at up to 64W per port. The 600W total PoE budget powers a full floor of access points, cameras, phones, and door controllers without external injectors. Four 10G SFP+ uplinks connect the switch to a core or aggregation layer at line rate.
Layer 3 is what separates the Pro series from the Standard and Lite UniFi switches. Inter-VLAN routing, static routes, and a built-in DHCP server all run on the switch itself, so traffic between VLANs does not need to hairpin through the gateway. For a 48-port switch serving multiple subnets across a floor or building wing, that routing capability eliminates a bottleneck and simplifies the network topology.
Where the Pro 48 PoE Fits
- Offices, schools, and healthcare facilities powering 20-40 PoE devices (APs, cameras, phones, card readers) plus wired desktops, printers, and NAS units on the same switch, all on a 600W budget that handles high-draw devices without external injectors
- Multi-VLAN deployments where inter-VLAN routing on the switch matters: separate voice, data, IoT, and security VLANs routed locally instead of sending every cross-VLAN packet back to the gateway
- Structured cabling closets and server rooms where 10G SFP+ uplinks, 1U rack form factor, near-silent PWM cooling, and DC power backup readiness (USP RPS) are baseline requirements
What Sets the Pro 48 PoE Apart
- 40x PoE+ plus 8x PoE++ (802.3bt): The 8 PoE++ ports deliver up to 64W each for high-draw devices like PTZ cameras, multi-radio access points, or powered displays. Standard PoE+ tops out at 30W. The 600W total budget runs a full floor without splitting loads across multiple switches.
- 4x 10G SFP+ uplinks: Connect to a 10G core, aggregate switch, or NAS at wire speed. A 48-port switch with only 1G uplinks bottlenecks under real aggregate load from dozens of clients hitting the same target.
- Layer 3 switching: Inter-VLAN routing, static routes, and DHCP server built into the switch hardware. Traffic between VLANs stays local. The gateway handles WAN and firewall rules; the switch handles internal routing.
- DC power backup ready: The USP RPS port accepts DC input so the switch stays online during an AC power failure. In a deployment with PoE cameras and access control, switch uptime is not optional.
- Near-silent PWM cooling: Temperature-controlled fans in a 1U steel chassis that fits a standard rack without adding noise to an office closet or open workspace.
Build and Racking
1U rack-mount SGCC steel enclosure (17.4 x 15.7 x 1.7 in., 13.78 lb). 48x 10/100/1000 Mbps RJ45 ports: 40x 802.3af/at PoE+ (30W per port max) and 8x 802.3bt PoE++ (64W per port max), 600W total PoE budget. 4x 10G SFP+ uplink ports. Internal PSU with DC power backup via USP RPS. 60W max switch consumption (excluding PoE output). Layer 3: inter-VLAN routing, static routing, DHCP server. Layer 2: 802.1Q VLANs, IGMP snooping, port mirroring, spanning tree, storm control, jumbo frames. Near-silent PWM temperature-controlled fans. Managed through UniFi Network. Part Number: USW-PRO-48-POE.
