Do 3000W Inverters Require Special Wiring?
Yes, and it is the part most often underestimated. Power is the same on both sides of an inverter, so 3000 watts drawn at 12 volts is on the order of 250 amps on the DC side before conversion losses, an order of magnitude beyond what an accessory socket or a light-gauge run can carry. An inverter at this rating is wired directly to the battery bank with heavy-gauge DC cable kept as short as practical, protected by a correctly rated fuse or breaker close to the battery. The AC side is straightforward by comparison, since the four outlets are simply used as ordinary 120V receptacles. Sizing the DC cable and overcurrent protection for the real load is the step worth getting right before installation day.
