Bring Film and Negatives to a Scanner Built for Paper
Scan positive and negative transparent originals on the Expression scanner already sitting on the bench. This is Epson's own transparency unit for the Expression 12000XL Graphic Arts Scanner and the Expression 13000XL Archival Scanner, adding transparent-media capability as a factory option rather than a workaround. Fit is specific here. Epson lists this unit for the Expression 12000XL Graphic Arts and Expression 13000XL Archival scanners, so check the model name printed on your scanner before ordering rather than assuming it carries across the wider Expression family.
What Does a Scanner Transparency Unit Do?
A flatbed scanner normally reads light bounced back off an original, which is how it captures paper. Film does not work that way, because the image lives in a material that light needs to pass through rather than reflect off. A transparency unit supplies illumination from the opposite side of the glass so light travels through the original on its way to the sensor, and that is what allows an Expression scanner to capture the positive and negative transparent materials this option is built for.
