Ten Gigabits Across the Building, on Fiber You Already Have
A 10GBASE-SR transceiver is the short-reach optic that turns an empty SFP+ cage into a 10 Gigabit fiber port. This HPE module takes an LC duplex multimode connection and carries it up to 400 meters on OM4 grade fiber, which covers most runs between floors, closets, and adjacent buildings on a campus without stepping up to long-reach optics. It is an HPE C-Class module in a standard SFP+ plug-in form factor. See the rest of the SFP and transceiver modules range at Island Electrical Supply.
- 10GBASE-SR over multimode fiber with a single LC duplex connector.
- Rated to 400 meters, which is the OM4 reach rather than the 300 meter figure quoted for OM3.
- Standard SFP+ plug-in module, 2.2 inches deep and hot-pluggable into an SFP+ cage.
What Is a 10GBASE-SR SFP+?
SR stands for short reach. It is the multimode variant of 10 Gigabit Ethernet optics, designed for links inside a building or across a campus rather than between sites. The transceiver plugs into an SFP+ port on a switch or server adapter and terminates a duplex LC fiber pair, one strand transmitting and one receiving. Distance depends on the fiber grade rather than the optic: this module is rated at 400 meters, which reflects OM4 multimode, and the same class of optic reaches shorter distances on older OM3 or OM2 cable. Where a run exceeds that, the answer is a long-reach LR optic on singlemode fiber instead, so confirming the installed fiber grade is the step worth taking before ordering.
