How It Works
The unit sits at layer 1, meaning it switches the physical CAT6 path rather than inspecting anything travelling over it. Because the switch ports are transparent to data rates, formats, and protocols, whatever runs on that link keeps running, at speeds up to 10 Gbps. Control comes four ways: the A/B pushbutton on the front, an Ethernet remote-control port that accepts SNMP commands, a telnet session using the same command set as the serial interface, and an RS-232 line, with dry contact available as well. The relays are latching, so a switched position survives a power failure or a deliberate power removal rather than snapping back to a default, and Black Box rates the mechanism to 1,000,000 cycles.
